割とポピュラーなジョークなのでご存知の方も多いとは思いますが、なかなか好い話なので載せてみますね☆
Young King Arthur was ambushed and imprisoned by the monarch of a neighboring kingdom. The monarch could have killed him but was moved by Arthur's youth and ideals. So, the monarch offered him his freedom, as long as he could answer a very difficult question. Arthur would have a year to figure out the answer and, if after a year, he still had no answer, he would be put to death.
若きアーサー王が隣国の君主の奇襲に遭い、囚われの身となりました。その君主はアーサーを殺すこともできましたが、彼の若さと理想に心を動かされ、アーサーがある難問に答えることができたら自由にすると申し出ます。答えを得るためにアーサーには１年の猶予が与えられますが、もし1年たっても答えが分からなければその時アーサーは殺されることになります。
The question?...What do women really want? Such a question would perplex even the most knowledgeable man, and to young Arthur, it seemed an impossible query. But, since it was better than death, he accepted the monarch's proposition to have an answer by year's end.
その問題とは何か？…それは、女性が本当に求めているものは何か？というものでした。これはどんな知恵者をも悩ませる難問であり、若いアーサーには到底無理な問いだと思えました。でも死ぬよりはましだと思い、彼は1年後に答えを出すという君主の提案を受け入れます。
He returned to his kingdom and began to poll everyone: the princess, the priests, the wise men and even the court jester. He spoke with everyone, but no one could give him a satisfactory answer.
アーサーは国に帰ると、ありとあらゆる人に意見を尋ねました。王女達に司祭、賢者や道化師に至るまで皆と話をしましたが、誰からも満足のいく答えは得られませんでした。
Many people advised him to consult the old witch, for only she would have the answer.
すると多くの人がアーサーに魔女に相談するように勧めました、というのも魔女だけは答えを知っているはずだからです。
But the price would be high; as the witch was famous throughout the kingdom for the exorbitant prices she charged.

The last day of the year arrived and Arthur had no choice but to talk to the witch. She agreed to answer the question, but he would have to agree to her price first.

The old witch wanted to marry Sir Lancelot, the most noble of the Knights of the Round Table and Arthur's closest friend!
なんとその年老いた魔女は、円卓の騎士の中で最も気高くアーサーの親友でもあるランスロットとの結婚を望んだのです！
Young Arthur was horrified. She was hunchbacked and hideous, had only one tooth, smelled like sewage, made obscene noises, etc. He had never encountered such a repugnant creature in all his life.
若いアーサーはゾッとしました。魔女は背中が曲がっておぞましく、歯も1本しかなく、ドブ水のような悪臭をさせ、下品な音を出しているのですから。これまでの人生でこんな不快な生き物に出会ったことはないくらいです。
He refused to force his friend to marry her and endure such a terrible burden; but Lancelot, learning of the proposal, spoke with Arthur．
アーサーは友達のランスロットを彼女と結婚させ、酷い目に遭わせることは出来ないと魔女の申し出を断ります。しかしランスロットはその提案を知ると、アーサーに言いました。
He said nothing was too big of a sacrifice compared to Arthur's life and the preservation of the Round Table.
アーサーの命と円卓の維持に比べたら、どんな犠牲も大きすぎることはないのです、と。
Hence, a wedding was proclaimed and the witch answered Arthur's question thus:
というわけで二人の結婚が宣言され、魔女はアーサーの問題に次のように答えました。
What a woman really wants, she answered....is to be in charge of her own life.
女性が本当に求めているものとは、と彼女は答えます。それは…自分の人生を自分で決める、ということです。
Everyone in the kingdom instantly knew that the witch had uttered a great truth and that Arthur's life would be spared.
魔女が偉大な真実を口にしたこと、これでアーサーの命も救われるだろうということを、王国の人々は直ちに理解しました。
And so it was, the neighboring monarch granted Arthur his freedom and Lancelot and the witch had a wonderful wedding.
そんなこんなで隣国の君主はアーサーを解放し、ランスロットと魔女は盛大な結婚式を挙げました。
The honeymoon hour approached and Lancelot, steeling himself for a horrific experience, entered the bedroom. But, what a sight awaited him. The most beautiful woman he had ever seen lay before him on the bed. The astounded Lancelot asked what had happened.
そしていよいよ蜜月の時間が近づくと、ランスロットは恐ろしい体験に備えるための心構えをして寝室に入りました。しかし何という光景が彼を待っていたことでしょう。今まで彼が見た中で一番美しい女性が目の前でベッドに横たわっていたのです。驚いたランスロットは何が起きたのか尋ねました。
The beauty replied that since he had been so kind to her when she appeared as a witch, she would henceforth, be her horrible deformed self only half the time and the beautiful maiden the other half.
その美女が言うには、魔女として現れた時にランスロットがとても親切にしてくれたので、魔女は以後一日の半分はおぞましい醜い姿、でも残りの半分は美しい乙女の姿でいられるというのです。
Which would he prefer? Beautiful during the day....or night?
あなたはどちらがお好み？昼間の間だけ美しい方がよいか…それとも夜の間だけ？
Lancelot pondered the predicament. During the day, a beautiful woman to show off to his friends, but at night, in the privacy of his castle, an old witch? Or, would he prefer having a hideous witch during the day, but by night, a beautiful woman for him to enjoy wondrous intimate moments?
ランスロットはこの難題について考えます。昼間、友達の前で自慢する時には美しい女性、だが夜に彼の城で二人きりになると年老いた魔女になる方がよいか？それとも、昼間は醜い魔女だが、夜になって愛を交わす時間を楽しむ間は美しい女性となる方を選ぶべきか？
